Attending a wedding fair is an exciting and valuable experience for any couple planning their big day. It’s the perfect opportunity to explore options, meet vendors, and gather inspiration. To make the most of your visit, here are some essential dos and don’ts to keep in mind.

DO’s

Plan Ahead

Research the event beforehand, including the list of exhibitors and scheduled presentations. Identify the vendors you’re most interested in and create a priority list to make the most of your time.

Pre-Register for the Event

Many wedding fairs offer early registration, which can come with perks like free entry, special discounts, or exclusive vendor meetings. Plus, pre-registering saves time on the day.

Bring a Plus-One

Having your fiancé(e), a trusted friend, or a family member with you can be helpful. They can provide a second opinion and help you collect and sort through information.

Wear Comfortable Clothing and Shoes

Wedding fairs involve a lot of walking and standing, so dress comfortably. Layers are ideal as venues can sometimes be warm with all the activity.

Take Notes and Photos

You’ll come across many vendors and ideas, so keep a notebook or use your phone to jot down details and take pictures of things you love.

Have an Excuse to Get Away

Have an excuse to get away from a vendor that won’t stop talking some talk way too much. You don’t have all day to spend with just one vendor.

Ask Questions

This is your chance to engage with vendors, understand their offerings, and compare services. Ask about pricing, availability, packages, and any custom options.

Collect Business Cards and Brochures

Gather information from vendors that interest you so you can review it later. Keeping a folder or a designated bag for materials can help you stay organized.

Be Open to New Ideas

Even if you have a vision in mind, exploring different themes, styles, and services can provide fresh inspiration for your wedding day.

Follow Up After the Event

Take time to review all the information you collected. Reach out to vendors you’re interested in and schedule meetings or consultations to discuss details further.

DON’TS

Don’t Feel Pressured to Book on the Spot

While discounts can be tempting, take time to discuss and compare before making a final decision. If a vendor insists on immediate booking, it may be a red flag.

Don’t Forget to Set a Budget

With so many beautiful ideas on display, it’s easy to get carried away. Keep your budget in mind to ensure you’re making choices that align with your financial plans.

Don’t Overlook Small Vendors

While big-name vendors may be tempting, smaller, local businesses often offer unique services and more personalized experiences.

Don’t Bring Too Many People

While a second opinion is valuable, bringing too many people can make decision-making overwhelming and stressful.

Don’t Ignore the Fine Print

If you do decide to book a service, read all the details carefully. Ensure you understand cancellation policies, deposit requirements, and what’s included in your package.

Don’t Be Afraid to Walk Away

If a vendor doesn’t align with your vision or seems pushy, don’t feel obligated to engage. Stick to what feels right for your wedding.

Don’t Forget to Enjoy the Experience

Wedding planning should be exciting, not stressful. Have fun, enjoy the samples and demonstrations, and celebrate this special stage of your journey.

By following these dos and don’ts, you’ll have a productive and enjoyable experience at the wedding fair, helping you bring your dream wedding to life.

Summer isn’t summer without a few parties. And, as ever, no party is complete without drinks. Here are a few of our favourites – some alcoholic and some not – that are worth a try this season.

Sangria

(recipe stolen from my Spanish friend, but with a little twist.)

Serves 10-12

2 bottles of red wine

125ml of brandy

450ml of prosecco or soda water

Apples, oranges, peaches, lemon

Sliced orange slices to decorate

Half a cup of sugar

First cut the fruit into small, bite size pieces – 1cm cubes is perfect. Pour over brandy, 1 bottle of red wine, and the prosecco or soda water and leave for a minimum of 3 to 4 hours before adding the remaining bottle of red. Add more sugar if needed and lots of ice.

Lastly add a double shot of spiced rum. Warning: drink this one sensibly to avoid being carried out of the party.

Lime Gin Fizz

Serves 1

4-5 ice cubes

2 measures gin

1 measure lime cordial

Soda water

Lime wedges to decorate

Add ice cubes to a tall glass. Add gin and lime cordial. Lastly add soda water and wedges of lime to decorate. Don’t forget a straw and cocktail umbrella!

Classic Pimms

Serves 4

250 ml of Pimm’s

400ml lemonade

Ice

Orange, cucumber and lemon slices

Mint sprigs to decorate

Pour the Pimm’s into a large jug. Add ice, fruit and cucumber slices, then lemonade. Serve in tall glasses with mint sprigs.

Prohibition Punch

Serves 5-6

25ml of sugar syrup

70 ml of lemon juice

180ml of apple juice

To date, I’ve not met one person that doesn’t like the city of Bristol. You have art, history, the steepest hills (which means stunning views), amazing food – oooh such great food… I digress – events like Harbour Fest, and remarkable hidden gems dotted around the city. The list is endless. However, for this blog post we’ll look at the latter on the list. Hidden gems!

We pay homage to Totterdown’s The Old Picture House, a beautiful space serving not just the immediate community but everyone living in Bristol, or passing through the city for that matter.

Just like Bristol, The Old Picture House has great history and has been close to the hearts of neighbouring residents for decades. With bags of charm and a super chilled and friendly vibe on entering through its door, you can definitely see why it’s rated so highly by those in the community.

The wide double door at the entrance takes you into a spacious hall with a high ceiling and an expansive wooden floor filled with round tables, as well as a few larger square tables at the edges of the room. Tables and chairs are arranged around a projection wall on the right side of the room – no surprise as the projection board is huge, approximately 8 by 11 feet in size. Towards the back of the room is a well-equipped stage lit up by a large 40’s-style standing lamp and a beautiful black curtain backdrop scattered with fairy lights.

Kumar, the proud owner of the venue and a much-loved local, has seen it frequently transformed from the stylish Black and White Cinema House and Café to a gig space for musicians and their audiences. The space also serves as an arts centre, conference room for businesses and (my personal favourite) a birthday party spot fit for queens and kings! Although he could not confirm how many different types of events the space had been used for when asked, he was pleased to confirm the high praise received by families and business owners who have used the venue.

The flexibility of the venue and its proximity to Temple Meads make it a popular choice. Bookings also include use of the sound equipment, projector, bar and a small kitchen The kitchen is great for minimal food prep such as washing and reheating food. Bring your own booze is a must should you require it, which is music to the ears of the thrifty I’m sure!

If you haven’t already found a great medium sized space for your next event, whether that’s a networking event, concert, graduation party, engagement/wedding party, etc… please do check out The Old Picture House. With prices starting from as little as £30 per hour, space for up to 60 people and a guest opening time from 10am to 9:30pm, we challenge you on finding such great value for money and a more accommodating host than Kumar.

Bookings are being taken now via our contact form and should you have any questions, please email support@letterboxparties.com or call us on 0330 055 2567.

Next month, we’ll look at the perfect party drinks for summer. If you have a favourite party drink, please let us know for our poll – we’d love to include the most popular ones.

Ah, mums. What would we do without them? Mothering Sunday is quickly approaching (27th March 2022), so so we thought we’d look back at the history of the big day – and why Mother’s Day and Mothering Sunday aren’t actually the same thing…

The story begins in Ancient Greece, with a springtime celebration honouring Rhea, known as Mother of the Gods. Around that time, Ancient Romans were also partying in the name of the Mother Goddess Cybele.

In the 16th century, a Christian celebration of the Virgin Mary and all mother figures officially came into being on the fourth Sunday of Lent each year. Across Britain, children and young people working as domestic servants were given a rare day off so they could travel home and visit their mothers.

By the early 1900s, Mothering Sunday had fallen out of popularity across the British Empire. But across the pond, American Anna Jarvis had big plans for a brand new celebration of motherhood. Anna’s own mum, Ann Reeves Jarvis, had dedicated her life to helping mothers, setting up work clubs before the civil war to teach women how to care for their children.

When she died, Anna organised the first Mother’s Day celebration in West Virginia in remembrance. It was a huge success, and Anna began campaigning to get the day recognised as a national holiday across America. It was signed into law by President Woodrow in 1914, which prompted a resurgence of interest in Mothering Sunday traditions in the UK.

So maybe your local florist has an American to thank for their busiest day of the year…

Fun Facts

1. Mother’s Day is the biggest flower-buying day of the year in the UK, with an increase of around 70% compared with any other day of the year.

Check out these local Bristol florists for a beautiful bouquet worth ordering for the worlds best mum.

North Bristol – https://www.beausbouquets.co.uk
South Bristol – https://www.dongaysflorist.co.uk

And of course if you are based UK wide our recommendation has got to be for Bloom&Wild who’ll post flowers UK wide in a dinky box with how to arrange guide.

https://www.bloomandwild.com

2. Cards are the most popular way to show your appreciation, with 30 million of them being sent through the post for Mother’s Day each year.

Check out Moonpig for some great cards.

https://www.moonpig.com/uk/mothers-day/

3. In 1920s France, women who had lots of children received medals for helping to rebuild the population after World War 1.

Ok so you’re probably not going to give your mother a medal which is a good idea really. It’s fair to say though, what mother’s want the most is quality time together…it is truly the best gift you can give on top of the flowers, balloons and chocolates.

Lastly don’t forget a few hugs and kisses. They make the world go round after all.

Organizing a party can be a huge task, and if you are hosting the party at your house, it can be very demanding and stressful to stay on top of everything. But with our help, you too can be a Party Ninja by having a well thought out strategy and being aware of a few potential challenges.

SPACE

The most difficult part will most likely be determining how well your home lends itself to being a party venue for entertaining many people. Imagine you hosted a simple house party, expecting a few people, and each of them came with five friends; certainly, there won’t be space to contain them, let alone for them to have fun! You will likely need to move and store furniture, partially to safeguard your belongings and also to maximize the available space.

RISK OF DAMAGE

Even something as minor as a spilled glass of red wine can result in the need to replace a carpet or rug. Accidental damage to your favourite painting could be excruciatingly unpleasant. With the extra crowd and added demand, your toilet can be at risk of resigning from its job of flushing too.

NOISE

Parties are notorious for being excessively noisy events, either from people’s chatter and movement, or the music playing over or under the voices. When scheduled late at night and depending on your house type, you might risk irritating your immediate neighbours, which could result in more than a little resentment, and perhaps even a noise complaint to the council or police.

CLEANING

The day after the party, the clean-up operation might be more than you can imagine. You might find empty cups in places you didn’t know existed – not an ideal thing to deal with while you’re hungover or stressed.

PARKING

Not everyone has a large driveway or a neighbouring field where visitors can park their cars or vehicles. Attendees might need to park on another street or someone else’s driveway, potentially causing problems for your neighbours.

BATHROOM QUEUES

It’s tough to keep crowds under control when they’re in a hurry after eating or drinking too much and need to relieve themselves… Too many people might congregate outside the restroom, and the crowd becomes uncontrollable. You might also have to clean up any messes the next morning.

WEATHER

When planning a party, there are a plethora of things that may go wrong. While some might be due to human error, others might be because the heavens are just not on your side. It might be a cloudy day, making you unsure whether to go ahead or not. For an indoor party, this might not matter so much, but garden parties rely heavily on the elements for their success.

With a little thought and troubleshooting, these things should not be too troublesome to manage. However, read on for two more challenges that really decide the faith of your party.

Why Parties Fail

Lack of Organisation or Planning

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – it’s all about planning and organization when it comes to parties. The most common cause of party failure is a lack of planning. A party is made up of many distinct aspects and people. You must make sure that each aspect is well-organized. Improper planning will result in chaos and disappointment.

Supplier Issues

Despite your best efforts, you will most likely need to rely on others to assist you in pulling off your party. The event can be thrown off if just one supplier fails to show up or follow instructions properly. Vet your suppliers and make sure you know they are reliable before booking their services. Check their reviews out on their website, social media platforms they are on or trust pilot if they are registered.

We aren’t all party planners, and we aren’t all experts at making sure everything runs smoothly. However, here are a few things you will need to prioritize and some you should consider to ensure your event is a great one.

MUSIC MATTERS

Who wants to attend a house party with no music? I don’t think you’d want to. Good music will put your visitors in a good mood and set the tone for the rest of the evening. You can easily plug your phone into a speaker if you don’t own a good sound system. Make sure you create a playlist in advance. This will eliminate the stress of having to change the music every time a bad song comes on. There are some great apps with pre-made playlists, so you don’t have to spend hours searching for the best songs.

FOODS

If you’re having a gathering, you should at least have finger food on hand. No one wants to go to a party without a few snacks to nibble on. There are some inexpensive pre-made boxes at most large supermarkets, or you can check online for some quick and simple recipes.

To better understand what your party will require put yourself in the shoes of your guests and ask yourself what would make your experience more enjoyable if you were attending the party.

PEOPLE

I mean, this goes without saying but specifically think about the different people you are inviting. If you are inviting people with feuds or people that just hate each other for no reason (you know the ones), when they see each other there is always an argument or fight; well unless family it might be worth alternating events you invite them to. That way you avoid the headache of dealing with the constant drama. One or two drama productions is a must for most events, and you can’t be blamed for pulling up a chair and getting your popcorn out when it can be more entertaining than TV, but still, too much is just tiring and ruins the night.

THE LITTLE THINGS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

For example, you’ll need a place for your guests to cool their drinks, and your fridge might not be big enough. Having a few coolers about or asking guests to bring their own is a good idea, but this is something that many hosts overlook. It’s always a great idea to keep cab numbers on hand. Guests (and you) may get a little carried away and we all know driving while intoxicated is a terrible idea. Consider displaying the cab number near the door so guests can see it when they are ready to leave.

If you want to make sure you covering all the bases and hosting like a pro, view our ultimate Host and Games Guide here with tips and added ‘wow factor’ pointers to make sure your event goes down as the party of the year.

Well depending on who you are asking you may have slightly different answers. For the host, a successful party may need to inform guests, make a great impression for someone or themselves or just be a great chance to have fun and socialise. For the guests, a successful party/event satisfies the need for fun and relaxation, inspires, comforts, and has a few great surprises – some of which come in the form of a ‘wow factor’. Flowers can provide a ‘wow factor’ depending on how well they are used as they can give your party an amazing feel and create a beautiful and vibrant environment. Below are some great ideas on how you can use flowers’ decorative ability to blow your guests away.

Entrance

The entry point of your event space. The outside sometimes gives people what to expect on the inside. A remarkable entry design will excite and impress guest. You can either use flowers on the entrance door by being creative with the floral arrangements. If there are steps then, you can dress the sides with bright bouquets in a well-designed container.

A welcoming floral arrangement will set the tone for the guests and with their scented qualities can leave a long-lasting memory. After all, our smell is the sense that triggers memory the most.

Welcome Table

If welcome tables are integrated into your parties, then they shouldn’t be bland. Dress up the table with cool colourful vibrant colours. Don’t be afraid to try out new schemes, be creative and wild with the floral piece. If you have a knack for designing and are creative, you should definitely be a little or a lot daring if you have the capacity. If you don’t have the skills or capacity to decorate and need help, Letterbox Parties can offer additional services including Balloon Design and additional support with sourcing all you require for your event. Please drop us an email on support@letterboxparties.com or alternatively use our contact form to drop us a message. We’d be happy to advise you on do’s and don’ts and extras to think about when planning your event. Moving on…

Grand Designs

Centerpieces/showpieces have been a prominent part of parties. They play a huge role far beyond what you can think of. They can inspire, act as a mini landmark in your venue or a focal point if you are trying to communicate something specific, not to mention provide the perfect photo op zone. You can play around with the shape and characteristics of the designs. Some examples of flowers you can use for this purpose include Roses, Tulips, Daisies, and green plants like Cactus Euphorbia or Eucalyptus leaves. Don’t forget you can add flowers and greenery to balloon arches and other balloon designs.

Frames

In addition, the vessels or frames the flowers are arranged around or on play an important role in accentuating the beauty of the arrangements. A silver, gold or white framework can give a classy feel, whilst dark colours can create a beautiful contrast with bright arrangements. If you are unsure about your design, you can carry out sample arrangements before the day to see what works best.

Furniture

Another way to make your space exciting is by adding a great floral arrangement to chairs as well as tables. Depending on the invent, chairs and tables can be covered with full fabric or lace pieces including runners for the table. However, an impressive and draw dropping wow factor can be gained by replacing these more traditional fabrics with chairs and table runners made up of flowers or greenery. This of course can be very costly if you are entertaining a lot of guests, so maybe this can be done for the guest/s of honours table or chair/s.

Flowers

We are experts in saving time when creating events but unfortunately not expert florists. We highly recommend the award-winning Bloom&Wild for jaw-droppingly beautiful flowers for your next event. They offer gorgeous floral arrangements delivered to or through your letterbox ready for self-assembling. You can arrange flowers in your preferred vase or container of choice or think out of the box and be as creative as you would like in using the flowers to decorate your space. They also do cater for occasions – see their selection here.

Things to note:

Depending on the floral arrangement you may need to pre-order 3 to 5 days in advance so buds can be fully open in time for your event.

Bloom&Wild delivers across the UK however if you would like more locally sourced flowers, we can assist you with looking into options for your city, contact us at support@letterboxparties.com.

This can damage relationships and make people view you differently. In this article, we’ll talk about ways you can avoid social suicide at your next event.

The Oversharer

Most people like meaningful conversations. But when you’re meeting someone for the first time, it’s important to remember that sharing too much too soon can make people uncomfortable. Oversharing is usually an unconscious act that people don’t realise they are doing. A good way to overcome this problem is to be more mindful of what you’re saying in situations you are feeling anxious and want to make a good impression. When you’re just meeting someone, start off with small talk – it’s expected. Asking people questions is a great way to get to know them. Questions like “Are you traveling anywhere exciting this year?” or “What’s your favorite restaurant in the city?” are great conversation starters that lead to a lot of back and forth. People love talking about themselves, so asking questions is a great way to make a good first impression.

The Smartphone Addict

Understandably, some events can be stressful and make people feel very anxious, especially if they don’t know many people. It’s easy to stay on your phone, in a corner, pretending to do something important but this won’t make the event any more enjoyable or end any quicker. It can also make people feel you’re unapproachable, which may be a result you don’t want. If you’re too anxious to start off a conversation with someone that you don’t know, there are a few methods that might work. If you’re going with a friend, ask them to introduce you to some people they know, and if you’re going to an event alone, realize that flattery can go a long way. Genuinely complimenting someone on their outfit or hair can start a conversation, gain you an ally as well as open up an opportunity for further conversations. Now, if the issue is that you are addicted to your phone and or social media – may I suggest some form of counselling.

The Gossiper

Have you noticed that wise people don’t talk badly about others? When people are secure in themselves, they don’t feel the need to gossip about others. People gossip because they want to feel included, validated or because they are toxic. None of these reasons are a good reason to gossip. If you want people to trust you and share details of their lives with you we recommend you avoid spreading information you have not fact checked.

Bad-mouthing others isn’t recommended either as this can also come back to bite you. People usually find out who has been saying rude things about them and the confrontation is never fun even if it’s entertaining for others. To avoid negative speech, stop before you start. If you feel like a conversation turning negative, change the subject. It’s difficult I know, but try to keep speech positive and avoid ill-natured comments – it gives you the advantage of peace of mind and others will respect you more.

The Fire Starter

Bringing up certain topics including politically leanings is a sure way to make people uncomfortable and start a heated debate. Everyone has different opinions and unless it is someone you’re close to, it’s best to avoid starting certain conversations. If someone becomes offended by what you say, it can cause an argument and even a scene. People may also form preconceived notions about you that aren’t true. If someone around you talks about politics, try to steer the conversation towards something less controversial. If the person isn’t taking the hint, it’s best to just smile and nod instead of starting an argument. Alternatively if you’ve ran out of patience or have none for the person in the first place, politely make a speedy exit to another group of friends or the food and drink areas.

Lastly… You knew this was coming and our list would not be complete without this centuries old issue.

The Drunk (AKA – Alcoholic, Lush, Dipsomaniac)

It’s easy to have one too many when you’re at a social event so it’s important to know your limit. We’ve all seen it. The one person at an event who gets way too drunk and acts like an idiot. This may have been you. With luck, no one was armed. These one-off occurrences can be forgiven, after all we are humans. However, if you are consistently over drinking and causing mayhem at events – it’s not a good look, pull your socks up. If you don’t want to be the person who got way too drunk and did something they could never live down, make sure to read on and follow the advice.

First of all, know your limit! If you don’t know your limit, then find it. Start by sticking to one alcoholic drink every 30mins, and keep a track of the unit amount associated with it. Before you get another alcoholic refill – if the room moves with you or 1 finger starts looking like 2 – best stay on the water or soft drink. If 1 finger does look like 2, you’ve had it – you are definitely drunk and have past your limit. Make a note of the total alcoholic drinks and units you’ve had for the next time – then stay under the total. To keep yourself strong whilst you are trying to stick to your limit, remind yourself of the results of overdrinking, an horrendous hangover, bridget jones diary levels of embarrassment, potentially going to prison! It may help to have a drink in your hand that you are sipping – doesn’t have to be alcoholic. This will stop other people offering you more drinks and will give you something to fiddle with if you fall into the involuntary-fidgeter group. If you have tried all this already and failed or enjoy being drunk all the time, may I suggest counseling and an AA subscription.

In conclusion, social suicide can happen to anybody. If it happens to you or someone near you, try to distract yourself and others so the moment can be quickly brushed under the carpet. Apologize if necessary. And don’t forget that if it happens to you, it’s important to forgive yourself, and to reassure yourself, that it’s an inevitable part of life.
